During my time as a college student, I have discovered that there are three great banes of studying. If one is attempting any sort of serious work (papers, test reviews, homework problems, etc.) and meets up with one of these banes, one will surely fail. It is nearly impossible to resist these temptations when they are placed before you.
The first of the banes is - Facebook. As this social networking site matures, it becomes increasingly more popular and increasingly more interesting. These days you can do almost anything on Facebook: play games, chat with friends, look at pictures and video. If you're trying to do any work on a computer with internet connection, there is always that nagging pull. Who knows what juicy gossip is being spread through cyberspace this very minute. Did Sue see Bill at the party? What's Jo's relationship status? Have your aunt's twins been born yet? You'll know as soon as it happens - but only if you're on Facebook.
Then there is the television. So much information - so much easy information. Hours of mindless entertainment, breaking news, and stunning historical facts all wait for the click of a button.
Next is the ever present food supply that's probably sitting within feet of you. While actually eating might not be too much of a deterrent from work, the preparation certainly is. Get up, rummage around in the fridge, find some scissors because you don't have the upper body strength to open a bag of mini-muffins; then when you're done, get up, throw it away, open Facebook ... Depending on how much you snack, this can become very time-consuming. And putting too much high fructose corn syrup into your blood stream may distract you in other ways, like making you worry about how big your food baby is getting.
With all these distractions, it's a wonder people ever even bother to try to get anything done. So my advice to you is to give in. You know you want to, and you know you're going to eventually. Might as well get it over with. You'll feel so guilty afterward that you'll study for that chemistry final twice as long as you would've otherwise. With a twitter feed open of course.
